ALOHAnet goes into operation
Why do we still talk about frames, MAC addresses and collision domains even though modern switches work very differently?
Early computers often stood alone. As soon as several systems needed to share printers, storage or computing resources, engineers needed a local network that did not behave like a telephone exchange.
At Xerox PARC in the early 1970s, the first Ethernet concepts emerged. Bob Metcalfe combined ideas from packet-switched networks with the practical problem of many computers sharing one medium. ALOHAnet was an important influence: multiple stations share a medium and must deal with collisions.
Classic Ethernet was a shared medium. If two devices transmitted at the same time, a collision occurred. CSMA/CD described how stations listen to the medium, detect collisions and retransmit later.
Frames, MAC addresses and much of the terminology from shared coaxial cable networks survived. Modern switches use full duplex and avoid collisions, but the language of the old architecture still appears in manuals and exams.
FOH networks, Dante, Art-Net, sACN and NDI all build on Ethernet foundations. Understanding Ethernet history helps explain why switches, broadcasts, MAC tables and topology planning matter.
An unmanaged FOH switch connects several playback machines, a console and an access point. Even if collisions are no longer visible, it is still a shared Layer-2 system where broadcasts and bad cabling have consequences.
