From DMX Cable to Art-Net

Art-Net emerged because growing numbers of DMX universes could no longer be distributed sensibly over individual cables.

The Problem

Large shows needed many DMX universes. Building separate cables and splitters for every universe became hard to manage and hard to change.

The Story

Artistic Licence developed Art-Net in the late 1990s as a DMX-over-Ethernet protocol. Ethernet became the transport infrastructure, and nodes converted between network and DMX.

The Technical Idea

Art-Net transports DMX data over UDP. Nodes are addressed and universes are distributed logically. Important: the Art-Net term Sub-Net is not the same as an IP subnet.

What Survived Until Today?

Universes, nodes, broadcast/unicast decisions and discovery remain central concepts. Older Art-Net terminology still appears in consoles and node menus.

Why Event Technicians Still Care

Art-Net is common in lighting networks. Wrong IP ranges, too much broadcast or confused Sub-Net terminology can destabilize shows.

Eventhacker Field Example

A node receives no data although its IP is reachable. The cause is not the IP subnet but a wrong Art-Net Net/Sub-Net/Universe combination.
